Save One Adoption Criteria

An All-Breed Division of Dalmatian Rescue of SW VA

Questions?

Once an animal is rescued, our job is not done until a permanent, loving home is found.  Save One, It Matters makes a lifetime commitment to each of the animals who enter the Save One, It Matters program.  For that reason, we have certain criteria for adoption:

  • No animal will be adopted to anyone with a previous conviction for animal cruelty or domestic violence.
  • No animals will be adopted to students living in dorms.
  • No animal shall be adopted to an individual without approval of all adults at the residence.
  • Animals must be adopted as members of the family and cannot be left alone outside without human supervision.
  • Animals are not adopted as gifts.  If the animal is a gift to someone, the recipient must be present at the adoption interview and sign the adoption papers.  The home visit will be made to the recipient’s home.
  • Except in very special circumstances, dogs must have a fenced yard suitable to the size and breed of the dog.  Animals will not be adopted in situations that would require being chained, roped or leashed.
  • The pet will not be left unattended for a long period of time while confined.
  • According to state law, all animals shall receive humane care, including but not limited to: adequate water, food, shelter, sanitation, exercise, personal attention and veterinary care.
  • Adopting persons must commit to purchasing an annual license tag in the appropriate municipality, having the animal examined yearly by a licensed veterinarian and provide medical care, heartworm prevention for dogs and all required vaccinations.
  • No adoption shall be made to individuals having unspayed/unneutered animals.
  • A home visit will be required prior to the adoption.

Since we are a foster group, we are in a position to know (as much as one can know) our animals.  Please believe us if we decide that the pet you are considering for adoption is not suitable for your lifestyle or home.  Our decisions are based upon the best interests of both the pet and your family.
